English Barley Twist Rustic Wakes Kitchen Table
You are viewing a wonderful rustic English wakes table with drop leaf. The table has been hand carved from oak and has the distinctive barley twist design legs and stretchers – the ultimate if you are going for the cosey, rustic, farmhouse vibe in your kitchen dining table.
These tables were called wake tables for a reason – they were used to hold coffins at a wake after a funeral in the village. They are obviously easy to store things on due to the drop leaf system so I imagine easy to place coffins on. Despite the slightly morbid description I think it’s a fascinating insight into the history of these tables.
The drop leaf system means the two oval sides can come down to make this table oblong. Hence it’s great for different dining occassions. For Every day use in a kitchen it can be stored against the wall and then pulled out for bigger occasions.

If you like the rustic look then this really is the ultimate. This gorgeous oak refectory table extends. The table has been hand crafted from the finest oak and is solid and chunky with no wobbles. The legs are hand turned and very chunky linking the stretchers to the bottom. The apron to the table has refrectory style hand carved sections perhaps better illustrated by the close up photos. The table extends so you can make more space with it when required for dinner parties and the like. The table is offered in very good condition and sits eight chairs when unextended. That’s the great thing, you can open it out to sit more people when occassion arises.
